Following the COVID-19 press release published by Rio Tinto on March 30, 2020, ActiPension sent the following message to Mr. Jean-Sébastien Jacques, CEO of Rio Tinto.
Dear Mr. Jacques,
I read the COVID-19 update press release published by Rio Tinto on March 30, 2020 with great interest.
I would like to congratulate Rio Tinto on its decision to donate $25 million to hospitals and various foundations.
It is commendable that you are ensuring the protection of your employees with the various measures put in place. You have also shown concern for the protection of the communities where you have various operations.
However, I am certain that you are not forgetting the thousands of people in these communities who greatly contributed to making Rio Tinto the company it is today. I’m talking about retirees. And we know that retirees are among the most vulnerable populations. Their health is vulnerable, but they are also faced with economic vulnerability.
I am certain that Rio Tinto will show its commitment by securing the continuity of retirement funds and the protection of purchasing power of those who were instrumental in building the company.
It would be very much appreciated if Rio Tinto would support its pioneers through this health crisis and the subsequent economic recovery in the same way as it is supporting its clients, employees and host communities.
We would also like to reiterate our desire to discuss these matters with Rio Tinto management.
